ראש ה-FBI לשעבר ג'יימס קומי ספג ביקורת נוקבת בדוח של משרד המשפטים על הדלפת המזכרים על השיחות שקיים עם הנשיא דונלד טראמפ. בדוח של המפקח הכללי במשרד, שפורסם אתמול (חמישי) נכתב כי קומי לא הצליח "לעמוד" בחובתו לשמור על מידע רגיש. עוד נכתב כי אמר כי קומי הפר את כללי ה-FBI בכך שהוא מסר את תוכן המזכרים לאחד מעמיתיו כדי לשתף אותו עם כתב.
עם זאת, אבל המפקח הכללי אמר שהוא לא ממליץ להעמיד לדין את קומי על כך. קומי הוא אחד ממתנגדיו הבולטים של טראמפ מאז שפיטר אותו במאי 2017. הנשיא מאשים אותו בחתרנות.
בדוח נאמר כי לאחר פיטוריו, חשף קומי את החלקים הבלתי מסווגים ממזכר שכתב על שיחותיו הפרטיות עם טראמפ. הוא העביר את התוכן לחבר, לעורך דינו האישי דן ריצ'מן, ואישר לו לשתף זאת עם עיתונאי בניו יורק טיימס.
"אם עובדי ה-FBI בהווה או בעבר יפעלו לפי הדוגמה של המנהל לשעבר ויחשפו מידע רגיש למען מטרותיהם האישיות, ה-FBI לא יהיה מסוגל למלא את חובת אכיפת החוק כראוי", נכתב. המפקח מצא שקומי הפר גם את מדיניות המשרד בכך שהחזיק עותקים של המזכרים בכספת בביתו ולא עדכן את ה-FBI כי עשה זאת.
בדוח נכתב עוד כי קומי שיתף את המסמך מכיוון שהוא רוצה ללחוץ על משרד המשפטים לפתוח בחקירה עצמאית נגד הנשיא. "לקומי היו עוד כמה אפשרויות חוקיות אחרות להביע את תמיכתו במינוי תובע מיוחד, שלדבריו זו הייתה מטרתו בחשיפה", נכתב. "מה שלא היה מותר לו היה חשיפה ללא אישור של מידע רגיש מחקירה שהושג במהלך עבודתה-FBI, על מנת להגיע לתוצאה הרצויה מבחינתו האישית".
למרות הדוח הנוקב, קומי אמר כי הצדק עמו מאחר שלא הייתה המלצה להעמיד אותו לדין, כפי שדרשו תומכי טראמפ, וכי נקבע שהוא לא הדליף חומרים מסווגים. טראמפ, לעומת זאת, כתב בטוויטר כי קומי "צריך להתבייש בעצמו".
White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement that Mr Comey "is a proven liar and leaker" who "forced" the nation to endure a "baseless politically motivated, two-year witch hunt".
"Comey disgraced himself and his office to further a personal political agenda, and this report further confirms that fact," she added.
Mr Comey wrote seven memos between January and April 2017 about conversations he had with Mr Trump.
He said that the president asked the FBI director to pledge loyalty to him during a private dinner. And at a private Oval Office meeting weeks later, Mr Comey says the president asked him to drop an inquiry into former US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
Mr Flynn was fired for misleading the White House about his interactions with Russian officials. He pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about the encounters.
The firing of Mr Comey prompted nationwide uproar and one day after his memo was leaked to the New York Times, the Department of Justice launched an investigation to establish if there was collusion between the president's 2016 election campaign and Russia.
That special counsel inquiry by another former FBI Director, Robert Mueller, concluded there was not enough evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy, despite a number of interactions between Trump aides and Russian officials.
Mr Mueller's final report also noted that the president repeatedly tried to interfere with his investigation, though the special counsel did not conclude whether this amounted to criminal obstruction of justice.
